Correcting Some Of The Common Problems With Your Backswing

There is a mountain of information out there about correcting some of the common problems with your backswing. But all of that information forgets to mention the most important part of it all…impact and the path through impact.

All great players have their own swing style, but their intentions are the same where it counts, the impact zone.

Balance is very essential in executing the right golf swing and in this article, I point out three reasons why you may be having difficulties achieving the required balance and I also give three golf tips for balance to correct the situation.

One of the most common problems with your backswing is poor setup

Why Golf Guides Work Better For Women GolfersA good setup as you approach your shot is essential to helping you maintain balance throughout the golf swing. Setup is easily the most critical golf tip on balance and being able to make a good shot.

If your setup is good, even if your other technique is wrong the chances of making a good shot very high. Part of making a good shot of course involves maintaining your balance throughout the swing.

Trying to hit the ball with all your strength

Here is a rather familiar problem amongst amateur golfers. You want to make your drive as long as possible and therefore you hit the ball with all your strength.

Not surprisingly this action rarely has the desired effect and in many cases, it results in loss of balance.

The golf tip here to correct the balance problem, in this case, is that the golf club is specially designed to do most of your work for you, and technique and golf fitness will work much better than brute force.

Weak flabby and unexercised muscles

Your level of golf fitness will have a big say in how well you maintain your balance during and after a golf swing. Golf fitness means that you will have strength and power in your muscles which will give you more confidence and help you maintain your cool and the correct posture all the time.

The golf tip on balance here is that strengthened and conditioned muscles will always make a huge difference, not only in your balance but also in your entire game.

One of the most confusing terms in golf is the “flat wrist”.

The Flat Left Wrist at impact. You can have the so-called “perfect takeaway”, “perfect backswing” and “perfect position at the top”, but if a player can not arrive at impact with a flat left wrist, they are just wasting their time.

Not having a flat wrist through the impact area in your golf swing produces inconsistent contact and leads to fat shots, thin shots, and high, weak hits.

Essentially, flipping means your lead wrist, the left wrist for right-handed golfers, breaks down, allowing the clubhead to pass your hands before impact. When that happens, you lose clubhead speed and control of the clubface.

To improve your contact, you can practice drills that will straighten out your wrists at impact, and there are also training aids to keep your wrist flat.

To explain why I feel this way, I will ask you to try one such drill.

Chipping Drill

The wrist flip often occurs because your body stops rotating on the downswing, and your wrists take over. You can improve your body rotation with a chipping drill.

Take the iron and grip down on the club so both hands are about halfway down the shaft. The grip end of your club will point outside your front hip.

Swing your arms back. As you swing forward, turn your hips and lower body toward the target, keeping the handle in front of your lead hip.

If you flip your wrists, the handle will hit you in the side. This drill will teach you the feeling of a flat lead wrist and show you the importance of downswing rotation.

The next tip concerns the rotation of your shoulders during the backswing

A Perfect Round Of GolfReach both arms in front of your body and take your right hand and grab your left wrist. Now, without turning your chest, pull your left arm across your chest with your right hand until your left arm is pointing to your right.

Notice how far your left shoulder moved. If your shoulders do this during your backswing and you think you are turning, this is the root of your backswing maladies.

For the clubface to come back to the ball square and centered, the geometry and relationship of the arms and upper body cannot change during the swing.

Doing this experiment, you see some of the common problems with your backswing. This may be too many golfers a major change in the arms/body geometry which can result in a whole slew of wild shots depending on what else the golfer tries to compensate.

Now try a new experiment. Cross your arms across your chest and turn your upper body until your chest faces away from the target (make a backswing).

You’ll notice that your arms and chest moved together. This is the same movement you should be making during your backswing.

This one change in your swing will create more distance with less effort. It is not the end-all of the golf swing, because there is more to controlling your movement, but it is one of the most common mistakes I see that many instructors miss during their lessons. Now you can improve your backswing and become more consistent.

Instead of thinking about turning your shoulders, think about turning your chest.
